Dr. David Cifu, Associate Dean for Innovation and System Integration at VCU School of Medicine, Joins TeachAids Advisory Team
TeachAids is proud to welcome Dr. David X. Cifu to the team of Medical Advisors for CrashCourse. With his experience as Associate Dean of Innovation and System Integration at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and as a Senior Traumatic Brain Injury Specialist for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, we are excited to integrate his knowledge into our CrashCourse curriculum.
Dr. Cifu is the Herman J. Flax, M.D. Professor, and Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at VCU. In addition to his academic duties, Dr. Cifu provides leadership in facilitating and building relationships and programming between the VCU School of Medicine and the McGuire VA Medical Center, including the establishment of McGuire’s new Cancer and Women’s Health Centers. He also provides administrative and academic leadership for the Sheltering Arms Institute, a state-of-the-art specialty rehabilitation hospital opening Summer 2020.
Dr. Cifu assumed the role of Senior TBI Specialist for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in September 2015. Prior to this role, he served as National Director of PM&R (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) for Veterans Health Administration, overseeing all polytrauma, amputation and traumatic brain injury services during the Gulf Wars.
He has been funded on 46 research grants for over $240 million, including currently serving as Principal Investigator of the VA/DoD $112.2 million Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (CENC). In his more than 25 years as an academic physiatrist, he has delivered more than 560 regional, national and international lectures, published more than 225 scientific articles and 65 abstracts, and co-authored or edited 35 books and book chapters. He is a former President of the American Academy of PM&R and Editor-in-Chief of the past editions, as well as the upcoming 6th Edition (2020), of Braddom’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation textbook.
Seeing over twenty thousand brain injury patients in his career, Dr. David Cifu has made an incredible impact and helped many families and communities regain their strength. With the help of Dr. Cifu, we look forward to promoting effective rehabilitation without the stigma associated with ‘invisible injuries’.
