Psychology and HIV Stigma Expert Joins TeachAids as an Advisor
We are honored to announce the introduction of Dr. Cheryl Koopman to our team of Advisors. Dr. Koopman’s work in HIV and stigma are in the heart of issues we come across in our HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, and her knowledge will be of tremendous value as we continue our mission.
Dr. Koopman is a retired Professor Emerita of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford University, she had served on the faculty of Columbia University, where previously she had also been a Post-Doctoral Fellow (in addition to at Harvard University). She has served as President of International Society of Political Psychology and on the Executive Committee of the New York Psychologists for Social Responsibility. She has also co-founded the organization, Massachusetts Psychologists for Social Responsibility.
Dr. Koopman has written numerous publications focused on the psychological consequences of highly stressful events such as political and interpersonal violence, natural disasters, and serious illnesses. Her research seeks to evaluate the effects of educational and mental health interventions. Her research emphasizes HIV-related attitudes, risk behaviors, and quality of life among gay and runaway adolescents, people living with HIV, and others in numerous countries, including India, China, Haiti, Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Malawi. Throughout the course of her research career, she has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles and works.
She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Virginia. Prior to that, she had earned her M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles and B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley.
