After a decorated career as an American pro-football player, Matt Birk has transitioned successfully from the NFL to entrepreneurship and philanthropy. We are so grateful that he is now also providing his expertise as a TeachAids advisor.
Birk started playing football in high school and continued with college football at Harvard. When he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1998, he became the first Harvard Crimson to be chosen by the NFL since 1985. In his 10 years as a center for the Vikings, Birk earned 2 All-Pro titles and 6 Pro-Bowl selections. He signed a $12 million dollar contract with the Baltimore Ravens in 2009 and went on to win his first Super Bowl championship in 2012.
After retiring from professional football in 2013, Birk remained involved with the NFL by holding several roles in the NFL Leagues Office. At the same time, he focused on developing his own business. As the CEO and founder of Matt Birk and Company, he empowers individuals and organizations–such as 3M, Coca Cola, and Walmart–to be the best that they can be through consulting, speaking and coaching services.
Birk has always been deeply committed to his community, especially improving education. He founded the H.I.K.E. foundation in 2002 with the aim of “providing interactive programs and resources needed to guide a child though key educational transitions.” Referring to his community service, Birk said: “I’ve enjoyed playing football. But as much as playing football, I’ve enjoyed doing this”. The foundation launched the “Ready, Set, Read!” initiative in Baltimore, working with 100,000 Baltimore students on improving their literacy skills. This year, Birk co-founded a Catholic high school in Burnsville, Minnesota.
Birk’s incredible experiences as a 15-year NFL veteran, as well as his deep dedication to education, will bring valuable perspectives to TeachAids’ advisory team. TeachAids is excited to have Birk’s support in developing concussion education to help young, aspiring football players.
