Stanford African Studies Professor and Education Expert Joins TeachAids as an Advisor
We are pleased to introduce Professor Joel Samoff as an Advisor on our team. It is without a doubt that Prof. Samoff’s rich research experience and work in education and development will serve the TeachAids mission of empowering global health through innovative education tremendously.
Prof. Samoff is an Adjunct Professor of African Studies at Stanford University’s Center for African Studies. He is an Advisory Editor for the International Journal of Educational Development and also holds a position on the editorial boards of various other publications such as the Journal of Educational Research in Africa, the Southern African Review of Education, and the Comparative Education Review. He has worked regularly with UNESCO and various international aid organizations as a researcher and policy advisor on African education. Such roles have included being the principal advisor for the Joint Evaluation of External Support to Basic Education.
Prof. Samoff, with a background in education, history, and political science, conducts research on and teaches about education and development. He has taught at numerous universities including Stanford (where he first joined the faculty in 1980), such as UCLA, the University of Michigan, and the University of Zambia. He has taught in many countries, including Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Sweden, Mexico, South Africa, and Spain. He has authored numerous research publications.
Prof. Samoff earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1972, after receiving his M.A. in Political Science from the same institution. Prior to earning those degrees, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from Antioch College. He has received honorary doctorates from the University of Pretoria and the University of the Free State in South Africa.
