The Tech Awards highlights TeachAids live from Hyderabad, India at 2013 gala
“Although HIV is preventable, millions of children have been orphaned by the virus. We were amazed at how TeachAids has been able to break through the taboos, using a rigorous research-based approach, and provide the highest quality education around the world.” – Leslie Zane, Senior Manager of The Tech Awards
On November 14th, TeachAids returned onstage at the Tech Awards Gala to a sold-out audience of more than 1400 thought leaders invested in designing technological solutions to solve global problems.
After an introduction from Polycom Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Jim Kruger, the TeachAids session opened with a video message from TeachAids founder and CEO, Dr. Piya Sorcar. Using cutting-edge Polycom technology, the session featured a live conversation with Dr. Sorcar along with Indian film actress and TeachAids ambassador, Anushka Shetty, in Hyderabad, India speaking with TeachAIDS co-founder and Chairman, Shuman Ghosemajumder, onstage at the gala in Santa Clara, California (photos).
In addition to Ms. Shetty sharing the successful launch of the Telugu and English versions of the HIV education software in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, TeachAids announced the development of 8 new education tools customized for the states of Assam, Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. In each state, TeachAids has partnered with the state government and local stakeholders to ensure wide-scale distribution designed to address more than 100 million children across India. Used in 78 countries, with more than 270 distribution partners, TeachAids has identified 50 countries, including India, to reach 90% of the world’s HIV-positive populations.
The 2013 Tech Awards recipients included 10 laureates in categories including environment, education, health, and economic development, as well as pioneering health care technologist Dean Kamen, who was named the James C. Morgan Global Humanitarian for 2013. Previous winners have included innovators such as Kiva, MIT OpenCourseWare, and Partners in Health.
Last year, TeachAids received the Microsoft Education Award (photos), recognized as one of 12 laureates for its research-based health education tools, which are particularly effective for health issues such as HIV and AIDS that are often stigmatized or taboo. This recognition bolstered TeachAids’ efforts to provide high quality health education to those who need it most.
The international Tech Awards is a signature program of The Tech Museum of Innovation, designed to “honor innovators from around the world who are applying technology to benefit humanity”. TeachAids is proud to be part of this dedicated group of individuals who push the boundaries to target the world’s most pressing challenges.
